Jonathan offers over 20 years of experience in retail banking, business development and business to business relationship management in the cards payments sector and has an enviable record in developing new markets in the Middle East.

Jonathan’s assignments have ranged from developing a major SME market needs analysis to a cash and expense management project for a leading GCC-based bank.

Born in Gibraltar and educated in the UK, Jonathan started his banking career in 1980 at Barclays Bank in Gibraltar. Here he was involved in various aspects of retail and corporate banking.

In 1983 he joined Bank of Credit and Commerce International in London, where he was responsible for running the cash office at a major branch in West London. During this time Jonathan successfully initiated and implemented a major marketing and sales programme designed to expand the bank’s market reach to a wider UK audience.

Three years later he joined Visa International where he provided business support to Visa member banks throughout the Middle East, Turkey, Spain and Portugal.

He was promoted to the role of Primary Client Relationship Manager responsible for expanding Visa’s business in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Iceland and what was then known as the USSR.

In 1990 he was appointed Senior Country Manager for Visa in Spain, Andorra and Gibraltar. Jonathan relocated to Spain for 12 months to establish and manage a Visa regional office in Madrid. In 1992, he transferred to Barcelona where he also had specific responsibility for Visa’s Olympic Games sponsorship activities.

In January 1996, he transferred to Dubai as part of a team that established a new regional office for Visa International in the Middle East. As Deputy General Manager Jonathan was responsible for maintaining and developing new and existing business opportunities throughout the Middle East region, and played a key role during a period when Visa International experienced unprecedented regional growth and performance.
