Poonam Bhojani is an Information Technology professional with over 17 years’ experience in banking and financial services. Poonam focuses on using technology to enhance operational efficiency and improve overall business performance. Recent assignments include project managing EMV chip card migrations for retail banking clients in the Middle East.
Poonam is an honours graduate in Economics and has obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (majoring in systems and marketing) from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore.
She started her career in Information Technology in 1982 when she joined Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Clients included a number of government departments in India and several major multi-national corporate companies.
In 1988 she moved to Dubai as Senior Systems Analyst in the Middle East office of Philips Information Technology. Her main role was to customise and implement PROFiTS IV, a front-end branch banking automation package developed by Philips. She was appointed as Module Leader for the database design and testing of the product in Hong Kong and then became Project Leader for the first Middle East implementation of PROFiTS IV in Oman. She was then seconded for six months to Philips’ Global Business Centre in Stockholm in Sweden.
In 1992 Poonam joined Mashreq Bank in the UAE as Manager for the International Banking Technology Group where she was responsible for developing the international division’s overall Information Management strategy. This involved everything from network development to the selection and implementation of the core banking applications.
She joined ABN AMRO as Head of Information Technology in 1995. Here she launched the first electronic debit card for the bank in the UAE and the first ABN AMRO Electron card globally. She was also responsible for implementing the bank’s ATM network.
In 1999, Poonam was appointed by the Government of Dubai to project manage the development of its Dubai Shopping Festival web site, www.mydsf.com. This became the first e-commerce-enabled web site in Dubai.
